Embassies of USA, UK, OHR and EU: The method of electing the Mayor of Mostar is clearly prescribed by the Statute

(Patria) - The European Union in BiH, the Office of the High Representative, the OSCE Mission to BiH, the Embassy of the United States of America, and the Embassies of the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement on the election of the Mayor of Mostar.

“The method of electing the Mayor of the City of Mostar is clearly prescribed by the Statute and the current Rules of Procedure. We call on all city councilors not to further postpone this process, to show responsibility, and to quickly elect a mayor in accordance with the legal framework at the next session. We welcome the constructive dialogue of all councilors on a joint program with concrete measures, with the intention of improving the functionality of the City of Mostar and meeting the expectations of the citizens,” they stated.

The session of the City Council in Mostar was interrupted on February 12, at the request of Irma Baralija from the BH Bloc.

The election of the mayor was postponed so that political parties could agree on the proposal of the BH Bloc (SDP BiH, Our Party) which came up with an agreement that this city, instead of one, would have three leaders who would rotate every 16 months.

For HDZ BiH, this idea is unacceptable, because, as Čović assessed, “the only outcome can be further blockades, deeper divisions, and complete dysfunctionality of the city administration”.

A new session has been scheduled for today at 4 PM.
