US Embassy analyzes document from Bakinci: Party politics in BiH moving towards oligarchy

(Patria) - The US Embassy has analyzed a document published in the media, which contains topics discussed by the state coalition in Bakinci.

"The proposals contained in the document written in Laktaši on January 18th speak volumes about elections, and very little about electoral integrity. As the United States has already noted, the only legal way to respond to the European Court of Human Rights rulings concerning the Presidency is through constitutional amendments.

Other proposals in the document would strengthen the existing unaccountable system and move party politics in Bosnia and Herzegovina towards oligarchy, which is the wrong direction for the country's democracy.

The language referring to ballot scanning appears designed to preserve options for electoral fraud that occurred in the October 2022 elections as well, rather than ensuring every citizen’s ballot counts.

Finally, reform of election commissions that reduces political parties’ control over these bodies is key to strengthening the country’s democracy," stated the US Embassy.
