Ahmetović appointed Bundestag rapporteur for the Western Balkans

SARAJevo, (Patria) - The important role of the Bundestag rapporteur for the Western Balkans has been assigned to the young social democratic politician Adis Ahmetović. His main aspiration is, as he stated, to use his position to stabilize the region.
"I have always viewed the fact that my family comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina as an advantage and a kind of enrichment," said Adis Ahmetović, a new member of the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), in a recent interview with DW.

Ahmetović took over the role of Bundestag rapporteur for the Western Balkans from another social democratic politician, MP of Croatian descent Josip Juratović. These two social democratic MPs have been closely cooperating on issues related to the Western Balkans since Adis Ahmetović first entered the Bundestag.

Activity in the Western Balkans from the very beginning
In mid-November, a few weeks after Ahmetović was elected to the Bundestag with a direct mandate in the electoral district of Hannover-Stadt I, Ahmetović and Juratović met with Željko Komšić, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Stuttgart. Even then, Ahmetović began to speak critically about the destabilizing role of representatives of Republika Srpska. "It is obvious that the Dayton Peace Agreement should be undermined from the Serbian side by the Serbian representative in the Presidency, Milorad Dodik, questioning state structures," Ahmetović said at the time, expressing the opinion that such actions should be stopped "through international sanctions and increased international military presence" in BiH.

A few months later, specifically on January 6, after the US imposed sanctions against Milorad Dodik and some of his associates, Ahmetović, now a member of the Bundestag's Foreign Affairs Committee, expressed his desire for Germany to take similar steps. "US sanctions represent a necessary and correct step that Germany should join. We must act decisively against those who perpetrate corruption and destabilization and sow discord in the region, as well as against those who enable and support them," Ahmetović stated.
