JULY 8: Gatti Santana and Brammertz to Arrive in Sarajevo for International Conference on 30th Anniversary of Genocide

(Patria) - The City of Sarajevo, the Post-Conflict Research Center, and the Association "Movement of Mothers
of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves" as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica,
will organize the art installation "Scarves of Remembrance" and the exhibition "Mothers/Majke" at the Sarajevo City Hall on July 7, starting at 7 PM.

On Tuesday, July 8, an international conference titled "Srebrenica 1995-2025: Confronting the Past" will be held, starting at 10:30 AM.

The exhibition "Mothers/Majke" by artist Nour Hassan features 25 portraits of Srebrenica
Mothers, members of the Association "Movement of Mothers of Srebrenica and Žepa," who lost their loved ones in the genocide. The Movement's mission is to uncover the truth about the missing from Srebrenica, Žepa, and surrounding areas during 1992-1995, preserve the memory of the genocide, seek justice and fight for transitional justice, and shape the way the genocide is commemorated so that the culture of remembrance is based on historical facts.

Artist Hassan from New Zealand, with an academic background in fine arts and history, created the portraits based on photographs of the Mothers.

"The least the portrait should convey is a certain emotion – not just to capture a likeness," said Hassan, emphasizing that she hopes her works will serve to represent and remember the Mothers of Srebrenica and open a dialogue that is overshadowed by other discourses in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During the opening of the exhibition "Mothers/Majke," the art installation
"Scarves of Remembrance" will also be unveiled, symbolically representing the scarves and shawls that Srebrenica mothers, sisters, and wives, as well as other women throughout BiH, the region, and the world, use in their daily lives, especially during commemorations for their loved ones.

The international conference will be attended by representatives of the International Residual
Mechanism for Criminal Courts, the European Union, the United Nations (UN), the Office of the High Representative, and international organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as experts in transitional justice from the region and the world, the non-governmental sector, and religious institutions, along with youth from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world. Graciela Gatti Santana, President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts, and Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts, will participate in the conference.

The conference aims to highlight the need for criminal prosecution of genocide perpetrators, the prosecution of genocide deniers, to stimulate discussion on the future of civil society in peacebuilding, including challenges and new directions, and to outline the role of education and religion, as well as youth, in building sustainable peace.

A live broadcast from the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide at UN headquarters in New York will also be organized at the conference, starting at 5 PM.

At the United Nations headquarters in New York, addresses will be given by Munira Subašić, President of the Association "Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves," António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Philémon Yang, President of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Denis Bećirović, member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mirela Osmanović, Srebrenica Memorial Center, and Zlatko Lagumdžija, Ambassador
of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations.
