200 years of the Husein-kapetan Gradaščević Mosque: A story of continuity, faith, perseverance and identity of a people

(Patria) - The Gradačac branch of the Islamic Community will mark a great jubilee this year with a series of events - 200 years since the construction of the Husein-kapetan Gradaščević Mosque.

Although, as explained in an interview for the MINA Agency by the chief imam of the Gradačac branch, Nusret-ef. Kujraković, the ceremonial opening will be held after the completion of restoration works planned for the end of August or beginning of September, a series of events leading up to the date itself will discuss this town, Captain Gradaščević and his legacy.

- Two centuries of existence are not just a number; it is a story of continuity, faith, perseverance and identity of a people. This is also an opportunity to reflect on everything that Husejnija has meant over time - said Kujraković.

He emphasized that Husejnija is not just an architectural edifice; it is the very heart of Gradačac and a place where destinies met, first life lessons were learned, and joys and sorrows were shared.

- In its vicinity and under its auspices, a bond of togetherness was formed that lasts to this day. Over its 200 years, this mosque has witnessed turbulent times, changes and challenges.

Despite everything, it remained upright and dignified, as a reminder that what is built with faith and sincere intention does not fade but endures and grows stronger - Kujraković stressed.

Until the opening itself, an exhibition marking the 200 years of Husejnija is planned, which will present photographs of the mosque throughout its existence. A special part, Kujraković emphasizes, will be dedicated to Husein-kapetan Gradaščević.

- A round table, scientific gatherings and forums on the history of Gradačac, Ottoman architecture, and the role of the mosque through time are also planned. There, too, we place special emphasis on Husein-kapetan and the endowment of his family - Kujraković points out.

Students of secondary and primary schools will also participate in this important jubilee, through a literary competition titled "My Husejnija" as well as educational workshops on the history of the mosque and organized visits.

- As part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary, we also plan to produce a documentary film featuring the congregation and the mosque itself, as well as to publish a monograph - Kujraković emphasizes.

He adds that we are facing a jubilee that calls us to pause and remember those who built and preserved Husejnija, but also to renew our own responsibility towards the heritage we have received.

- The celebration of the 200th anniversary of Husejnija will not be just a festivity but an expression of respect, memory and belonging. It will be an opportunity to once again realize how deep the roots that connect us are and how strong the value of togetherness that gathers us is - Kujraković points out.

This is also a moment when we do not only look back, says Kujraković.

- This anniversary calls us to look forward, because we have a responsibility to preserve, nurture and pass on this heritage to future generations. Husejnija is not just a monument of the past but a living place of encounter, spirituality and togetherness - Kujraković stated.

Finally, he urged that this great jubilee be not only a commemoration of the past, but also a renewal of our commitment to shared values.

- May it remind us that only together can we build a future worthy of the heritage we have received, and that true values are enduring.
