On November 18, 1990, SDA, SDS, and HDZ Won the General Elections in SR BiH

On this day, November 18, 1990, the General Elections were held based on the Decision of the President of the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina simultaneously for members of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, writes the BiH news agency Patria.

The total number of citizens registered on the general voter lists was 3,033,921, of which 100,432 were temporarily working abroad. For the elections to be legitimate, more than 50% of the voters registered on the general voter lists had to participate.

Four candidate lists were formed for the election of members of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (printed as parts of a large ballot paper), listing candidates who were Muslim, Serb, Croat, and others who did not declare their nationality or belonged to other ethnic groups.

Those who received a relative majority from each ethnic group were elected as members of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Alija Izetbegović became the President of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The election of 240 deputies to the two chambers of the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina had to reflect the representation of the constituent peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina according to the 1981 census, with a permissible deviation of +/-15%.

Out of 43 registered parties, 15 participated in the elections, either independently or in coalitions. SDA, SDS, and HDZ won with a convincing majority, securing 84% of the parliamentary seats in the republican parliament, 75.5% of councilor seats in municipal assemblies, and 60.83% of councilor seats in the City Assembly of Sarajevo.

Momčilo Krajišnik was elected President of the Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Jure Pelivan was elected President of the Government. Based on these election results, a coalition of three political parties with national affiliations was formed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, from the very first sessions, deep differences in resolving open issues became apparent. Their political interests were diametrically opposed, primarily concerning the most important issues of state sovereignty. As early as 1991, open political disagreements escalated into armed conflicts, which in BiH resulted in aggression from 1992 to 1995, with hundreds of thousands of deaths and a genocide not recorded in Europe since World War II.
