Sarajevo got electric lighting before today's famous world metropolises London and Paris, as well as cities in neighbouring countries.
The authorities of Austria-Hungary, which governed Sarajevo at the time, began building a hydroelectric plant at Hiseti along the Miljacka River in 1893, and from 1 May 1895, the installation of electrical wiring in the most important streets and buildings in the city began.
The first electric lanterns in Sarajevo shone, on a trial basis, in Koševska Street, Ćemaluša to Ferhadija, and Čekrekčinica on 3 and 4 April 1895, and from 1 May the lighting was officially put into operation.
Until then, the main streets of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina were lit by gas lanterns, and earlier by oil lanterns, Patria writes.
