1-3 JULY International Scientific Conference 'Srebrenica 30 Years After the Genocide: Memory, Responsibility and Challenges of Denial'

(Patria) - The University of Sarajevo is organizing an international scientific conference 'Srebrenica 30 Years After the Genocide: Memory, Responsibility and Challenges of Denial', which will be held from July 1 to 3, 2025 in Sarajevo and Srebrenica.

The genocide committed against Bosniaks in Srebrenica and its surroundings in July 1995 is one of the most tragic chapters in the modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At least 8,372 Bosniak men and boys were killed, and the consequences of this crime continue to shape the social, political and legal context not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in the international community.

"Marking the 30th anniversary of the genocide with an international scientific conference is an opportunity to pay tribute to the victims, reaffirm the importance of truth and justice, and through academic discourse open space for relevant scientific and expert discussions. Despite the adopted United Nations Resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica and legal provisions that criminalize denial of genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina, denial remains present at the local, regional and global levels. These are all reasons for the academic community to take a leading role in research, documentation and education about this crime, in order to ensure permanent memorialization and prevent the repetition of similar crimes.

As the oldest and most significant educational and scientific institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the University of Sarajevo has a key responsibility in promoting scientifically based research and education about genocide, and this Conference has brought together the most eminent world and Bosnian-Herzegovinian scientists and researchers in the field of studying crimes against humanity and the crime of genocide," the UNSA announced.

The opening of the Conference will be held on July 1 at the Sarajevo City Hall starting at 7 p.m.
On the second day of the conference, at the premises of the UNSA Rectorate on July 2, several panels will be held with numerous participants and genocide researchers.

On the third day of the conference, participants will go to Srebrenica where they will pay tribute to the victims of the genocide, and the official closing of the conference will also take place there.
