A winter storm has caused a collapse in railway traffic and tram operations across the Czech Republic, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.
Czech Railways announced that this disruption affected the entire country, including one of the most important lines connecting the capital Prague with the east of the country, leaving around 100,000 passengers stranded on stopped trains across the country.
The storm began on Monday, and many passengers spent the night in trains without heating or at railway stations while the outside temperature was 7.3 degrees below zero.
The cold led to a suspension of railway traffic today as well, AFP reported. Radio stations reported that some passengers spent the entire night in trains that were stuck in place due to a fallen overhead contact line.
In addition, tram traffic in Prague was disrupted, and trams are expected to remain out of service for hours. The Czech Meteorological Service warned that unusually low temperatures will persist until evening.
Czech Railways called on passengers to postpone their travel and announced that several hundred passenger train departures have been canceled or rescheduled. Traffic at Prague's largest airport, "Vaclav Havel", is running smoothly.
