Countries Spared by the Coronavirus

(Patria) – The coronavirus has infected more than 3.2 million people, but has bypassed as many as 34 countries worldwide.

Some of the countries that have not reported a single case of coronavirus infection include Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Lesotho, Comoros, and Pacific island nations like Nauru, Kiribati, and the Solomon Islands.

As of April 20, 213 countries and territories out of 247 recognized by the UN have recorded at least one case of coronavirus. Of that number, 186 are recording local transmission of the virus, meaning community spread. Fatalities have been recorded in 162 countries.

However, the fact that a country has not reported a single case does not mean there have been no infected individuals in that country – there could be cases in secretive states like North Korea, or simply a lack of population testing.

There are also differences in the dynamics of the pandemic in different parts of the world; Asia, for example, has experienced two major waves of transmission across the continent, while many European countries began recording their first cases as early as the end of February.

At the same time, Latin America and Africa appeared to be 'clear' in January and February, only for the infection to rapidly spread across both continents afterwards.

Five countries and territories have completely rid themselves of the virus after a certain number of confirmed infections – Anguilla, Greenland, Caribbean islands St. Barts and Saint Lucia, as well as Yemen. These countries had no fatalities, and no longer have active cases, Reuters writes.
