Željeznice FBiH in the red with 52 million KM - Director Hadžibegić: We are aware that we are inefficient in our work

(Patria) - Mirza Hadžibegić, director of Željeznice FBiH, announced the business results of this company. As he stated, the accumulated loss is over 50 million KM, and the results were poor during the past year as well.

When all is said and done, the financial situation is bad.

"Regarding accumulated losses, as far as I know, they total around 52 million KM in the balance sheets. The total loss in 2025 is 36 million KM," he said.

Furthermore, the director himself admits that they are inefficient in their work.

"We are aware that we are inefficient in our work. The number of 2,500 employees would be too large in a more modern railway system. However, since we are not modernized and have not had significant investments, and by that I mean investments in IT infrastructure, we still do some things manually," stated Hadžibegić.

The manual tasks that the director mentions are also known to citizens who have their tickets written manually in 2026. They cannot travel to many destinations, and the furthest they can go is to Ploče.

"Passenger traffic accounts for seven percent," the director added.

The company points out that their current plan is to bring back the passenger train to Zagreb.

There are no shortage of problems in freight transport either, which forms the basis of their business, and thus the number of transported goods is declining.

"From eight million tons, which were transported in 2017, to 5.8 million tons in 2025. So, in eight years, the amount of cargo has decreased by a third," the director presented.

Željeznice FBiH place their hope in changes to the law that would allow dangerous materials to be transported only by railway. Until then, they transport oil, which is currently relevant due to current world events.

"We transport less than ten percent of the total needs for oil and petroleum products. Our desire is to take over transit routes from which we can benefit," the director states.

Željeznice FBiH also wish that Elektroprivreda BiH operates better so that they can also do better, although there are problems within Elektroprivreda BiH itself.

"Regarding Elektroprivreda BiH and the transport of ore to thermal power plants, we welcome the decisions of the Government of FBiH that would increase production in the mines and, consequently, our transport from the mines," he added.

At the end, Željeznice FBiH stated that a complete restructuring and change in the business model must be carried out, along with, they add, the mandatory modernization of all processes in ŽFBiH.
