Due to Increasing Time Spent in Nature: Increased Risk of Forest Fires

(Patria) - The Ministry of Economy of Sarajevo Canton, due to the increased risk of forest fires with the arrival of spring, addressed the public, once again emphasizing the importance of preserving and protecting forests, and warning of the risks, danger and damage from fires in forest areas.

„Forest resources of Sarajevo Canton represent the most valuable natural resource. These ecosystems are daily exposed to negative impacts of biotic and abiotic factors.

The damage resulting from forest fires is immeasurable. In addition to material damage expressed in destroyed timber mass, much greater damage occurs through temporary or permanent disruption of forest ecosystems.

In 95% of cases, the primary cause of forest fires is humans.

With the arrival of spring and good weather, an increased number of day-trippers is expected on the surrounding mountains and picnic areas, thereby increasing the risk of forest fires. Also, uncontrolled burning of weed waste increases the risk of fire outbreaks.

We remind that the Law on Forests of Sarajevo Canton prescribes fines for persons who light open fires in forests and on forest land, as well as on other land within a distance of up to 150 meters from the forest. Fire in the forest and on forest land may only be lit in places that are designated and marked, while adhering to prescribed conditions and safety measures.

The Forestry Administration of Sarajevo Canton appeals to owners of private plots bordering the forest to keep their activities under control and attention in order to avoid the risk of fire.

Timely response in the initial phase is very important for effective suppression and extinguishing of fires.

We ask citizens that if they notice a forest fire, they immediately react and inform: the Professional Fire Brigade of Sarajevo Canton, PUC "Sarajevo šume", the Forestry Administration of Sarajevo Canton and the Ministry of Interior of Sarajevo Canton“, they stated from the Ministry.
