Due to an unprecedentedly dry winter, we will run out of water!

Given the low amount of precipitation in the past and current year, experts warn that BiH will face major water supply problems, especially in the summer months.

The director of the Institute of Hydrotechnical Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Sarajevo, Tarik Kupusović, commented on the current situation for the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP) and presented grim forecasts.

- The year is dry, but precipitation has increased in the last ten days. If the forecasts come true and there is more precipitation by the end of the month, we will recover. This winter was mild, with little snow, so the accumulation in the mountains was small, there was nothing to melt so that we would have water reserves in the summer - Kupusović states for NAP.

Reductions are already being recorded in some parts of Sarajevo.

- It's shameful. We face a greater danger in the summer. Water enters the pipes from the outside, from the sewage system, groundwater, water that is not drinkable. It takes half an hour or an hour for it to be flushed and pass through the pipes clean. We don't even know that this water is dangerous, and we pay for it as drinking water. Various infectious diseases threaten us - says Kupusović.

Speaking about the water supply in the Sarajevo Canton, he believes that measures should be taken urgently to prepare the systems for a potential drought.

- First, I mean reducing water losses, leaks in the water supply system, especially in Sarajevo. One should not be surprised when there is a drought in the seventh, eighth, ninth month, and there will surely be one because it is summer. In Sarajevo, 3 cubic meters of water are pumped, and 700-800 liters are delivered to the consumer, then reductions must occur. There is no way for water to appear from somewhere - he explains.
