(Patria) – Residents of the Turkish village of Kalfat say they are proud of Boris Johnson's victory, reported Euronews.
The village of Kalfat, about 100 kilometers from Ankara, is the birthplace of Johnson's great-great-grandfather, Efendi Hadži Ahmet Riza, born in 1813.
After it was announced on Tuesday that Johnson had become the leader of the Conservative Party, about 1300 residents of Kalfat gathered to celebrate his victory.
Residents expressed their desire to host Johnson in the land of his ancestors.
They called Johnson's earlier negative comments about Turkey 'necessary in politics'.
Ahmet Riza's son, Ali Kemal - Johnson's great-grandfather - was an Ottoman political journalist who later became Minister of the Interior. He was considered a 'traitor' for his pro-British sentiment and was killed in 1922 during the Turkish War of Independence.
Ali Kemal's son, Osman Wilfred - Johnson's grandfather - was raised by his maternal grandmother, Margaret Johnson, in Great Britain after Kemal's wife, of Swiss-British origin, passed away, writes Euronews.
