Protect Nature and People: Regional Initiative Against Outdoor Fires in the Western Balkans

(Patria) - Outdoor fires pose a serious threat to the ecosystems, communities, and economy of the Western Balkans, with long-term negative consequences. To more effectively counter this challenge, a Regional Initiative has been established which, through improved coordination of competent ministries and joint action, raises awareness of risks and promotes sustainable outdoor fire management.

Unlike traditional methods that focus solely on fire suppression, the program advocates an integrated approach to fire management, encouraging cross-sectoral cooperation, strengthening local capacities, and developing more resilient landscapes. Prevention is at the core of the initiative, aiming to protect natural resources and communities, and to create a safer and more sustainable environment.

More than 90% of fires in the region are caused by human negligence, highlighting the importance of raising collective responsibility and community engagement. The Regional Initiative is supported by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry, which is a strategic partner in educational activities, policy development, and practical implementation of the program.

Through joint efforts, we strive for an ambitious goal: zero fires caused by human factors. We believe that every individual action contributes to a safer and more sustainable future for all generations in the Western Balkans.
