(Patria) – The number of new coronavirus cases in Italy is 'stabilising' and should start to decline next week, said Italy's Deputy Health Minister Pierpaolo Sileri.
He stressed that Italy must remain under the same strict measures for at least another two weeks if the current epidemic dynamics are to change.
Sileri, who himself was infected with the coronavirus and recovered, explains that Italy has reached a 'plateau' of the epidemic, which should be followed by a decline in the coming days, reflected in a reduced number of cases by the beginning of next week.
More than 12,400 people have died in Italy from the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus – more than in any other country in the world.
Sileri explains that 'those who fell ill a week or two ago are dying today. By reducing infections, the number of deaths will also decrease.'
He warned that any relaxation of measures would be premature and would have consequences.
He also emphasised the importance of serological antibody testing even after the epidemic to determine who was infected and whether they developed a certain level of immunity.
Having himself recovered from the coronavirus, he advised paying attention to 'minor' symptoms such as loss of taste and smell, which were present in a large number of patients even before they developed a fever and high temperature.
