Zahiragić: Under the guise of fighting femicide, an attempt is being made to push through legal recognition of same-sex unions

(Patria) - Federal delegate Haris Zahiragić pointed to an attempt to legally recognize same-sex partnerships under the guise of protecting women from domestic violence and fighting femicide.

- In the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, at the proposal of the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, amendments to the Criminal Code were adopted, which in the form of a final proposal are on tomorrow's session of the House of Peoples. Under the guise of protecting women from domestic violence and criminalizing femicide as a special form of criminal offense, many things that I consider contentious have been incorporated and pushed into these amendments to the Criminal Code, and tomorrow, God willing, I will speak about it at the session.

The biggest deception of all is found in Article 2, paragraph (17), which, in addition to marital and extramarital unions, which are also recognized within the meaning of this law, prescribes "life partnership" - whatever that means. And, "life partner is a person who lives with another person in a community of a more permanent nature" - explains Zahiragić.

He says he did not receive an adequate response to the official inquiry he sent to the representative of the proposer regarding what this is about and whether this is the regulation of same-sex unions in the Criminal Code.

- I proposed that this paragraph be amended so that after the words "lives with another person..." - the words "of the opposite sex" are added.

Tomorrow, the Government and then the delegates of the House of Peoples will have the opportunity to vote on this amendment, so that we have no doubts in the application of the law itself - he stated.

He regrets that this provision passed through the Ministry of Justice, the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, public debate, and the House of Representatives of the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but he adds that he wants to believe that all political parties, through their delegates, will have the opportunity to correct this already tomorrow in the House of Peoples.

- Comrades, it won't work... - he concluded.

- I will answer, yes, this is the regulation and legal recognition of same-sex unions, because a union of two persons of the opposite sex - who have not concluded a marriage - are already recognized as an extramarital union.

He adds that, as chairman of the Legislative-Legal Committee of the House of Peoples, he proposed an amendment, for which he received support from the majority of colleagues in that committee.
