Emir Spahić, Bayer's stopper, was substituted at the very end of the match against Bayern in the German Cup quarter-finals due to an ankle injury (Bayern won 5:3 after a 0:0 draw). After examination, a ligament tear was diagnosed, reports the Patria News Agency.
"I expect a four to six-week break, so this season is over for me," Spahić told Goal, explaining that he injured the same ankle as in the match against Austria in Vienna.
"I was perhaps playing the best season of my career. I felt great, and the team looked good. I got injured at the worst possible moment, considering we are fighting for third place in the Bundesliga, which leads to the Champions League, and there is also the match against Israel in June."
"I cannot say with certainty whether I will recover by then," Spahić added, explaining that according to initial forecasts, surgery is not necessary, but that possibility cannot be ruled out either," he told Goal.com.
Spahić declined to comment on reports in the German media about a confrontation with security guards after the match against Bayern.
