Government of Sarajevo Canton: Waiting lists for kindergarten enrollment abolished, accommodation secured for 682 children

(Patria) - The Government of Sarajevo Canton today approved and initiated the placement of children who remained on the waiting list for enrollment in the public institution 'Djeca Sarajeva' in private preschool institutions for the 2019/2020 school year.

In this way, the waiting list for enrollment in the public institution “Djeca Sarajeva” will be abolished, as due to its staffing and spatial limitations, it is unable to accommodate all children registered for enrollment. According to data from the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Sarajevo Canton, 682 children remained unenrolled in the public institution “Djeca Sarajeva”. For them, in the next school year, the Government of Sarajevo Canton will subsidize accommodation costs in private kindergartens in the same way as it does in the public institution “Djeca Sarajeva”.

Funds for this purpose have been secured in the Budget Rebalance of Sarajevo Canton, with the commitment of the Government and the relevant ministry to intensively work in the coming period on securing the missing spatial capacities for the public institution “Djeca Sarajeva”, as well as on launching targeted education and retraining programs for preschool teachers and educators.

“We will not allow any child to be denied enrollment in kindergarten. Waiting lists were a practice that we are now abolishing. In the first year, we are taking this temporary measure until we secure all necessary conditions, more kindergartens and educators, on which we have already begun to work intensively,” said the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton, Edin Forto, at today's session of the Government of Sarajevo Canton.

The relevant ministry, in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders, will initiate activities in the coming days for the publication of public calls and agreements for the implementation of this decision of the Government of Sarajevo Canton.
