FBiH Government warns of flood and landslide danger: Special risk on the Neretva river basin

(Patria) - The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with competent ministries and institutions, is continuously monitoring hydrometeorological conditions and is in constant communication with all competent bodies in the Federation of BiH. The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute and the Federal Civil Protection Administration regularly and timely inform the public about all available information, with appropriate instructions and recommendations for citizens.

The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute issued a Notice today on possible flash floods and landslides concerning the Adriatic Sea basin. The notice states that, due to heavy rainfall expected in the coming days throughout the Adriatic Sea basin, especially in the Trebižat basin, as well as other tributaries of the Neretva River, there is a possibility of local watercourses overflowing their banks.

Also, according to the latest results from the European Flood Alert System (EFAS), as a consequence of heavy rainfall and additional snowmelt, there is a possibility of the Neretva River and its tributaries overflowing their banks in the upper and middle courses, particularly tributaries in the Jablanica Lake area.

We remind you that information on weather forecasts and precipitation forecasts, used for the Federal Flood Protection Plan, is available on the website of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute at ww.fop.fhmzbih.gov.ba .

The Federal Civil Protection Administration regularly informs the public about the state of natural and other disasters in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and warned of the real danger of consequences from the announced heavy rainfall in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in their statement on January 3, 2026.

In the "Warning and Recommendations for Implementing Protection and Rescue Measures due to Announced Extreme Heavy Rainfall" published today, January 5, 2026, by the Federal Civil Protection Administration, this institution continues to recommend that all competent civil protection bodies at lower levels of government, public enterprises, services, and institutions take the following measures:

1. Placing all available civil protection forces and resources on increased alert, including professional units and other protection and rescue services;
2. Implementing preventive measures to protect people, residential and other buildings, infrastructure, and material assets, in accordance with protection and rescue plans;
3. Increased monitoring of watercourses, embankments, critical points, and areas prone to floods and landslides, and timely informing of competent services and the population;
4. Preparation of machinery, equipment, and personnel for potential emergency action and interventions;
5. Continuous communication and coordination with the Federal Civil Protection Administration, as well as mutual exchange of information.

They have issued specific recommendations for JP Roads of the Federation of BiH and the water management agencies for the Sava River and Adriatic Sea basins.
