Over 1.4 million Syrians returned home after the fall of the Assad regime

(Patria) - More than 1.4 million Syrians have returned to their homes since the regime of Bashar al-Assad was overthrown last December.

"For those who have returned, hope is real, but rebuilding isn’t easy", the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) announced yesterday on the X platform.

Some of the returnees have been displaced since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

UNHCR called on the international community to help Syrian families start a new life.

"They need support rebuilding homes and infrastructure, landmine safety awareness, legal assistance, and psychological support", stated UNHCR.

During the conflict, Turkey hosted around four million Syrians, more than any other country in the world.

Assad, who had led Syria for almost 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-government forces took control of Damascus on December 8.

The fall of his regime also marked the end of the decades-long rule of the Ba'ath Party, which had dominated Syrian politics since 1963.

Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed as the new president of Syria on January 29.
