You were with us when it was hardest and remained our greatest friends, and tonight we stand with you, with the American people and government in the joint fight against the coronavirus pandemic, said Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka, as announced by the City Administration.
The United States of America has become the world's largest hotspot for the spread of the dangerous virus, with more than half a million infected, while over 22,000 people in the US have died from the virus. The hardest hit is New York City, and the number of infected is rising daily. The US government is making enormous efforts in the fight against the spread of the virus.
Sarajevo's Vijećnica was illuminated tonight in the colors of the American flag, with a message of solidarity and support in these challenging times.
"The people and authorities of the United States of America are a proven ally and friend of the people and state of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the City of Sarajevo. This is a symbolic act sending an important message in days when the entire world is facing an unprecedented danger. I am convinced that the American people will find the strength and capacity to defeat this scourge. It is our responsibility and duty to offer a hand of support and solidarity to our friends," stated the Mayor of Sarajevo.
As he pointed out, the United States of America was one of the first countries to send aid in medical and protective equipment to Bosnia and Herzegovina at the beginning of the epidemic's spread in BiH.
Throughout decades of friendship and alliance between the two countries, the US has made an immeasurable contribution to the construction and reconstruction of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sarajevo, as the capital of BiH.
