The Council of Ministers is not an HDZ institution: Why are posts on X only in Croatian, as if the other two languages don't exist?

(Patria) - The BiH Council of Ministers fully respects the legal provisions on the equality of languages and scripts, the institution stated in response to questions posed by Šemsudin Mehmedović, a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, on December 29, 2025.

Mehmedović sent the following inquiry to the BiH Council of Ministers:

○️ Why does the BiH Council of Ministers not respect the laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding the equality of languages and scripts, given that almost all posts on the official X account of the Council of Ministers (formerly Twitter) are in Croatian and English - which is not even an official language in BiH?

○️ Why are the Bosnian and Serbian languages, as well as the Cyrillic script, completely neglected on this official communication channel of the Council of Ministers?

○️ Why has the Council of Ministers allowed its official X account to be misused and privatized, considering that posts from the private X profiles of the Chairperson Borjana Krišto and the Minister of Justice Davor Bunoza have been re-posted on it? Posts from the profiles of ministries led by HDZ cadres have also been re-posted - Minister of Civil Affairs Dubravka Bošnjak and Deputy Minister of Security Ivica Bošnjak?

○️ Why were all posts related to the Council of Ministers sessions, a total of 39, also in Croatian on the same official X account during the period from June 1 to December 28, 2025?

○️ Will the Council of Ministers determine who is responsible for such misuse of the official communication channel and sanction those responsible?


Mehmedović's questions

In their response to Mehmedović, the BiH Council of Ministers stated, as we mentioned at the beginning of the text, that they fully respect the legal provisions on the equality of languages and scripts.

"Posts on the official X account during the specified period are predominantly in Croatian, with some content in English for international communication.

The reason is that the posts follow the language of the current Chairperson Borjana Krišto, who, according to the Law on the Council of Ministers of BiH, represents the Council of Ministers in public.

The same practice was applied in previous convocations, where official communication followed the language and script of the chairperson, which is evident from viewing the Council of Ministers' X account.

All content is available on the official website in three official languages and both scripts, ensuring their full equality," the BiH Council of Ministers points out.

They further stated that Bosnian and Serbian languages, as well as Cyrillic script, are not neglected on the official X account.

"The posts relate exclusively to the activities of the Council of Ministers and the Chairperson, and the language of communication is aligned with the language of the current Chairperson, with consistent respect for the equality of official languages during previous mandates, which is clearly visible by viewing the official X account of the Council of Ministers," say the Council of Ministers.

They also add that all "reposts" are related to the activities of the Council of Ministers and its line ministries, with the aim of consolidating information and increasing the transparency of their work.

"Posts about the Council of Ministers sessions (39 posts in the period from June 1 to December 28, 2025) were published in Croatian because the Chairperson presides over the sessions and represents the Council of Ministers in public. The same practice existed in previous convocations and is easily verifiable.

For an objective assessment of the equal use of languages and scripts, it is necessary to consider a longer period, as long-term language practice depends on the leadership in each mandate. All official press releases about the sessions are available on the website in three languages and two scripts.

All communication is conducted in accordance with valid regulations and solely with the aim of informing the public about the work of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina," the institution responded.

In a brief comment on the responses received from the BiH Council of Ministers, Mehmedović told the Patria News Agency (NAP) that, as in all other cases, including the use of official languages in BiH, the Council of Ministers, headed by the Chairperson, uses almost exclusively the Croatian language on all official communication channels, which is contrary to the laws of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- Anyone who reads this without knowing the context might get the impression that it is an HDZ institution, because in addition to the language, the narrative of the political entity to which the Chairperson and the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers belong is also used, which offends the dignity of the Bosnian people and causes frustration for every well-intentioned citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For this reason, through a parliamentary initiative, in addition to increasing transparency in the work of the BiH Council of Ministers, I also requested the equal use of all three official languages - Mehmedović told NAP.
