EU Council gives green light to agreement with BiH on Frontex, awaiting Parliament

(Patria) - The EU Council today adopted a decision enabling the Union to sign an agreement with Bosnia and Herzegovina on operational activities carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).

The agreement will allow the EU and BiH to organize joint operations involving Frontex officers and border guards from BiH.

As stated by the EU Council, this means that Frontex border management teams can be deployed in BiH. This will enable Frontex to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina in managing migration flows, combating illegal immigration, and fighting cross-border crime.

After the European Parliament gives its consent, the Council will be able to conclude the agreement.

The EU Council recalls that in 2022 it gave the green light to open negotiations with four Western Balkan partners on cooperation with Frontex.

Since then, the EU has signed cooperation agreements on border management with Serbia, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.
