VIDEO: Refugees in Hungary Fed Like Animals

A disturbing video that has flooded social media shows the kind of treatment refugees are receiving in the main refugee camp in Hungary on the border with Serbia, reports the Patria news agency.

The footage is full of scenes showing police officers feeding them as if they were animals in a pen.

The video, secretly made by an Austrian volunteer who visited the camp in Röszke yesterday, shows about 150 people struggling with all their might for bags of sandwiches that Hungarian police officers, wearing helmets and hygiene masks, are throwing into an enclosed space in a spacious hall, reports AFP.

Women and children were among the chaotic crowd, while hungry people desperately tried to get hold of the bread flying through the air.

Many who were too far in the crowd to reach the food climbed the fence, waving and shouting to get the attention of the police.

"It's like feeding animals in a pen, like Guantanamo in Europe," says Austrian Alexander Spritzendorfer, who posted the video made by his wife Michaela on YouTube late last night, which quickly spread on social media and had over 20,000 views this morning.

Spritzendorfer, who is also a member of the Vienna city council from the Austrian Green Party, said he came to the camp in Röszke to bring food, clothing, and medicine to help the thousands of refugees pouring across the border.

As he explained, while he was talking to a Red Cross volunteer, his wife observed the feeding scene unfold and decided to record it.
