According to "Mondo", Spanish basketball player Nikola Mirotić tore Serbia's flag after the loss to Italy in the third round of EuroBasket, reports the news agency Patria.
During the match with Serbia in the first round, insults were heard directed at Mirotić, some words cannot even be written, and some told him that he had "sold out" because he does not wear "the right jersey".
He must have felt bad, at least because his team lost that match. He must have felt even worse after the loss to Italy on Wednesday, but that does not justify the act he committed.
The Podgorica-born player, born in 1991, headed towards the locker room, annoyed, and at the entrance to the tunnel, he encountered another provocation - Serbian fans waved their country's flag at him. Approaching them on his way out, Mirotić grabbed the Serbian tricolor and pulled it. The white part remained in his hand, torn, which was also recorded by TV cameras.
Shortly thereafter, in the mixed zone, at the insistence of Serbian journalists, the spokesperson for the Spanish national team, Ibon Lande, listened to what happened and went to get Nikola, but did not return with him.
"I am convinced that Mirotić did not know it was the Serbian flag. That he did not see what it was. Nikola did not tell me that, but I am convinced that it was so, because Mirotić knows very well what that move means and how it could be interpreted," Mondo reports Lande's words.
As for Mirotić, he expressed regret for his actions two hours after midnight via social media.
