Major step towards reopening of the Canadian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina!

(Patria) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada has made a decision to establish a diplomatic institution of an Honorary Consul of Canada in Sarajevo. This is a significant step towards reopening the Canadian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Through the institution of an Honorary Consul, Canada is opening direct diplomatic status with Bosnia and Herzegovina, serving as a diplomatic bridge between the two countries. It ensures easier access to state and international institutions, direct contact with authorities, direct contact with other consuls, and most importantly, direct local assistance in the absence of an embassy.

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora has repeatedly requested the Government of Canada to reopen the embassy. The current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Anita Anand, has supported the reopening of the Canadian Embassy in Sarajevo. This initiative has been supported by many members of the Canadian Parliament, including Bob Bratina, Robert Oliphant, Matthew Green, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly, and current Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, among others.

During the visit of the then Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Željko Komšić, to Canada, discussions with the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada also included the possibility and necessity of opening the Canadian Embassy in Sarajevo, which would further enhance relations between the two countries.

Canadian citizens, through parliamentary petition e1455 sponsored by Member of Parliament Bob Bratina, requested the opening of an embassy in Sarajevo. The petition was signed by several hundred Canadian citizens and was presented to Parliament by the sponsor, and subsequently sent to the Government for consideration.

The opening of the Canadian Embassy in Sarajevo would establish the much-needed direct diplomatic link with Bosnia and Herzegovina, enable direct diplomatic communication with government organizations and departments within Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as with non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, it would make a significant contribution to promoting the economic, cultural, academic, sports, and tourism potentials of Bosnia and Herzegovina, improve social and administrative protocols and activities, and facilitate communication for investors and the exchange process for students and professional staff at higher education institutions, companies, sports associations, and similar entities. It also presents an opportunity for the Canadian government to engage its diplomatic talents in improving democratic processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian community in Canada is intensifying its activities for the reopening of the Canadian Embassy in Sarajevo. Increased activity from relevant political institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina on this matter has also been requested.

Canada continuously provides strong support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political-legal subjectivity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a member of the Peace Implementation Council (PIC) Steering Board and a G7 leader, Canada advocates for the preservation of the Dayton Peace Agreement and the multi-ethnic character of the state of BiH. Canada strongly opposes policies that threaten BiH's stability, including the unconstitutional marking of January 9th and secessionist threats. The Canadian government supports the work of the High Representative and measures to strengthen electoral integrity. Canada supports the UN resolution from May 2024 on the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide, considering truth about the past as key to lasting peace. Regarding attempts to promote maps of BiH division (e.g., the presentation of a "third entity") and secessionist aspirations of the RS entity, Canada strongly acts against the undermining of BiH's constitutional order. By early 2026, the broadest support from Canadian officials for BiH was recorded, including members of the Government, Parliament, provincial premiers, and mayors. Through its diplomatic activities, Canada is one of the most significant foreign policy partners in preserving the integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
