Vandalism: Desecration of a cemetery in a returnee jamaat in the Kaljina Mufti's Office

(Patria) - The Sarajevo Muftiate strongly condemns the act of vandalism, the desecration of a Muslim cemetery in the village of Turkovići, which belongs to the Kaljina Islamic Community Mufti's Office.

– This shameful and uncivilized act has deeply disturbed believers and residents of Kaljina, especially because it happened during the days of Kurban-Bajram – a period when Muslims around the world express gratitude, peace, and togetherness – the Muftiate announced.

The news of the desecration of the cemetery, which represents a sacred place for Muslims, has hurt not only the families whose loved ones are buried there but also all believers and people of goodwill.

– It is especially painful that this act occurred at a time when many residents, who live in the diaspora, came to spend Bajram in their native region, with relatives and neighbors, wanting to mark these days in the spirit of faith, hope, and common values – the Muftiate stated.

The Sarajevo Muftiate calls on the competent institutions to urgently conduct an investigation, identify the perpetrators, and take all legal measures to prevent such attacks on religious and cultural property in the future.

– We also call on all citizens, regardless of religion and nationality, to jointly condemn such attacks on human dignity and basic civilizational values. The desecration of a cemetery is not just an attack on a religious site – it is an attempt to disrupt interpersonal relationships, coexistence, and trust. It is our obligation to respond to such phenomena decisively, but with dignity, in the spirit of our faith and the values that the Islamic Community nurtures and promotes. In these moments, we express our full support to the Kaljina Islamic Community Mufti's Office and all residents of the village of Turkovići, with a prayer that such unfortunate events never happen again – the statement from the Sarajevo Muftiate reads.
