Taking so-called 'white bread' in times of poverty is immoral

Prof. Dr. Enes ef. Ljevaković, the fetva-i-emin of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, believes that decisions to award so-called „white bread“ to officials during a time of great poverty are immoral and inappropriate, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria (NAP).

Ef. Ljevaković was asked on the portal rijaset.ba whether the so-called „white bread“, i.e., salary-level compensations that members of cantonal governments receive even after the end of their mandate for a period of one year, is haram according to Sharia, given that, as stated in the question, this salary was not earned?

Ef. Ljevaković first clarified that „the regulations establishing the right to so-called white bread were not enacted on the basis of Sharia nor are they abolished on the basis of Sharia, but on the basis of the political will of the ruling policy.

- We are of the opinion that these decisions/regulations in a time of poverty for a large number of people are immoral and inappropriate for the economic state of society and that they should be changed – he stated.
