(Patria) – The total death toll from the coronavirus pandemic globally stands at 102,667, while the number of confirmed infections is 1,697,364 – a figure that is certainly higher due to the presence of asymptomatic and untested cases worldwide.
The most affected countries by number of infections and deaths:
USA 502,876 / 18,747
Spain 158,273 / 16,081
Italy 147,577 / 18,849
France 124,869 / 13,197
Germany 122,171 / 2,736
Italy has extended strict emergency measures until May 3, which include closed borders, cities, and a ban on movement.
In France, which records as many as 980 deaths in a single day – a record number in Europe, a ten-year-old child has also died from the coronavirus. There, a total of more than 13,000 people have died, including 4,599 in nursing homes. About 7,000 people are in intensive care, which is 62 fewer than last week.
In the United Kingdom, also one of the most affected countries, 8,958 people have died so far. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has overcome the crisis that led him to spend three nights in intensive care, and now feels significantly better.
British medical officer Dr. Jenny Harries claims that the 'curve is bending,' but also that it is 'impossible to say whether we have passed the peak.'
The number of infections in Germany is rising rapidly – on Saturday alone, 4,133 new cases were confirmed.
Given the upcoming Easter holidays and nice weather, the population in European countries has been warned to respect the movement restrictions.
The EU has adopted an economic recovery plan worth 50 billion euros to help workers, businesses, and healthcare institutions in combating the consequences of the pandemic.
