USK: Damage from May floods amounts to 2.76 million marks

(Patria) - The floods that hit several local communities in the Una-Sana Canton in May this year caused damages of 2.76 million marks.

This is stated in a report that the USK Government adopted at today's session after commissions in cities and municipalities visited the affected areas and listed all the damages caused.

According to these reports, the greatest damages were in Bihać, Sanski Most and Bosanska Krupa, and in the local communities, 632,000 marks have been paid out from the USK budget in the meantime for assistance in emergency interventions and mitigating the consequences of the natural disaster.

"Due to the extremely large damage compared to the assistance received so far and own resources, it is necessary to submit a request for assistance in eliminating the consequences and remedying the damages to the Government of the Federation of BiH and the Federal Civil Protection Headquarters," the report stated.

During the May floods, several hundred residential buildings were under water, and the most critical situation was recorded in the area of the mentioned local communities where the Una and Sana rivers and their tributaries overflowed.

"We expect help, not only in terms of repairing the damages, which are enormous, for the second time in six months. This time we are also talking about damage that unfortunately affected farmers as well. The entire spring sowing was destroyed by these floods. We will seek to take a strategic position on how to reduce harmful climate impacts and the consequences of floods, but also to act preventively. I think that the City of Bihać and no local community can do this alone. We are talking about millions of funds," emphasized Elvedin Sedić, Mayor of Bihać.

The Mayor of Sanski Most Municipality, Faris Hasanbegović, says that assistance should soon be paid to citizens who suffered damages in the December floods last year.

The necessary funds for repairing the consequences of the May floods have yet to be secured.
