UNRWA suspends aid delivery through key crossing in Gaza

(Patria) - The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) today suspended the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip via the Israeli Kerem Shalom crossing due to insecurity.

"We are pausing the delivery of aid through Kerem Shalom, the main crossing for humanitarian aid into Gaza. The crossing has not been safe for months," said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.

He added that armed gangs last month stole a large aid convoy moving through that territory.

"Yesterday we tried to bring several food trucks along the same route. All were taken. This difficult decision comes at a time when hunger is rapidly deepening.

The delivery of humanitarian aid must never be at risk nor become a temptation," Lazzarini stated.

The UNRWA chief noted that the Israeli siege, restrictions, lack of security, and targeting of local police are preventing humanitarian operations in the Gaza Strip.

"The responsibility to protect humanitarian workers and supplies lies with Israel as the occupying power. They must ensure the safe flow of aid into Gaza and must refrain from attacks on humanitarian workers," Lazzarini said.

He called for a ceasefire that would also ensure the safe and unimpeded delivery of aid to people in need.
