Moderately polluted air in Sarajevo Canton, mask recommendation

(Patria) - Based on today's measurements by the Public Health Institute of Sarajevo Canton and the average at 8:00 AM, conducted at the automatic reference air quality monitoring stations in Sarajevo Canton, the Air Quality Index indicates a moderately to polluted air quality status, depending on the measurement location.

At most measurement locations, including Vijećnica, Ilidža, Vogošća, Ilijaš, and Hadžići, moderate air quality was recorded, while at the Saraj Polje and Bjelave measurement stations, polluted air quality was registered, and at the Otoka location, very polluted air quality was observed.

Current measurements show that today's air quality is more favorable compared to previous days, with moderate air quality recorded at most measurement locations, while elevated concentrations, predominantly caused by pollutants - PM2.5 and NO2, are still present at some locations. The data indicate a temporary stabilization, but without clear indicators of lasting improvement.

According to the weather forecast until the end of the day, sunny weather is expected with little to moderate cloudiness. The maximum daily temperature will be around -4°C, with a weak southern and southwestern wind, with speeds from 1 to 3 m/s. In the evening hours, conditions for temperature inversion are expected, which may lead to a renewed deterioration of air quality.

Health recommendations:

It is recommended for the sensitive population (children, pregnant women, the elderly, and chronically ill individuals) to avoid all physical activities outdoors, and for the rest of the population to minimize intense outdoor activities. Outdoor workers are advised to limit intense activities and use masks with protective respiratory filters FFP2, FFP3.

If prolonged outdoor exposure is necessary, it is recommended to wear masks with protective respiratory filters FFP2, FFP3. Masks are intended for short-term wear only and do not provide complete protection from air pollutants.
