United Nations confirms 103 civilian deaths in Lebanon since ceasefire with Israel

(Patria) - The United Nations has announced that it has confirmed the deaths of 103 civilians in Lebanon since the ceasefire with Israel in November 2024, calling for an end to the ongoing suffering, AFP reported.

The UN Office for Human Rights has called for renewed efforts for a lasting ceasefire, more than ten months after the agreed-upon truce.

"We continue to see the devastating impact of air and drone attacks in residential areas, as well as near UN peacekeeping forces in the south," said UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk.

Israel has continued with almost daily attacks on Lebanon, usually stating that it is targeting Hezbollah operatives or locations, despite a ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities, including two months of open war with the Iran-backed group.

"Families are simply unable to begin rebuilding their homes and their lives, instead facing the real and present danger of further attacks," Turk said.

"Hundreds of damaged schools, health facilities, religious sites, among other civilian locations, remain no-go zones or, at best, only partially usable."

The UN stated that by the end of September, it had confirmed 103 civilian deaths in Lebanon since the ceasefire. There have been no reports of deaths from missiles fired from Lebanon towards Israel since the ceasefire, it stated.

Turk's office stated that five people, including three children, were killed when an Israeli drone hit a vehicle and a motorcycle in the Bint Jbeil border area on September 21.

Turk demanded an independent and impartial investigation into the incident, and along with others, expressed concern about compliance with international humanitarian law.

Lebanon's Ministry of Health stated that one person was killed and five others injured in an Israeli attack on Wednesday in the south of the country, without specifying whether the victims were civilians.

More than 80,000 people remain displaced in Lebanon as a result of the ongoing violence, and about 30,000 people from northern Israel are also reportedly still displaced.

"At all times during the conduct of hostilities, civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected, and international humanitarian law fully respected, regardless of claims of ceasefire violations," Turk said. "The good-faith implementation of the ceasefire is the only path to lasting peace, and its terms must be respected."
