(Patria) - US officials confirmed that Democratic politician Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally wounded in an armed attack in Minnesota.
In a separate incident, Democratic Representative John Hoffman and his wife were wounded.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated that this was a "politically motivated assassination".
US Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that the shooting in Minnesota "appears to be a targeted attack on members of the state legislature".
"I am closely monitoring the developments in Minnesota following what appears to be a targeted attack on state representatives," Bondi posted on platform X.
She also confirmed that FBI agents are on the ground and cooperating with local and state authorities.
"Such horrific violence will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," Bondi stated.
Police believe the attacker disguised himself as a police officer and fled after an exchange of fire with responding police officers.
Minnesota Police Chief Drew Evans stated that officers received a call at 2 AM local time regarding an incident involving Senator John Hoffman and his wife.
A second call came in at 3:35 AM, while officers were proactively patrolling the home of Democratic politician Melissa Hortman.
According to Evans, police believe the attacker disguised himself as a police officer and fled after an exchange of fire with responding police officers.
US President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the "terrible shooting" that occurred in Minnesota and that everything points to it being a "targeted attack on state representatives".
In a statement posted on X by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt, Trump stated:
"I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that occurred in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack on state representatives.
Our Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI are investigating the situation and will prosecute all involved to the fullest extent of the law.
Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!"
