20th Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide Marked in Great Britain

A Bosnian woman living in Stoke-on-Trent, Aida Salkić Haughton, has joined volunteers working with a British charity to mark the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide with a special event for the second year in a row, reports the BH News Agency Patria.

Volunteers, in cooperation with Remembering Srebrenica and YMCA North Staff (Young Men's Christian Association North Staffordshire), will organize the second annual Srebrenica Memorial Day in Stoke-on-Trent.

This year's commemoration in Stoke is planned for July 10, 2015, and will be held in the YMCA conference hall. Local volunteers are currently preparing the program for the events planned for this day.

Aida Salkić (41) is originally from Cazin and has been living in Stoke-on-Trent for 4.5 years. She works for the Young Men's Christian Association.

- After attending the Srebrenica Memorial Day event organized by Stoke City Council last year, I decided to get involved in the organization of this event myself and to help raise awareness about the horrific events that happened in Srebrenica in July 1995. I believe that the victims of Srebrenica must not be forgotten, and each of us must do what we can to help the survivors, as well as educate the younger generations so that such a genocide never happens again – said Salkić Haughton.

Remembering Srebrenica raises awareness about the genocide throughout the United Kingdom. They collaborate with people across the country to help strengthen British society by learning lessons from history. This organization is also involved in organizing national cultural events to mark the Memorial.

This year's goal is to organize 100 events across the United Kingdom, most of which will take place during the Memorial Week (July 6-12, 2015).

The national ceremony will be held on July 6 at Westminster Cathedral in London, where over 2,000 people are expected to attend.

This organization enables individuals from the UK to travel to Srebrenica and speak with survivors and the families of those whose family members were killed.

On this occasion, YMCA wants to involve as many young people as possible to teach them about the events and consequences of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina – emphasizes Aida.
