Liver and cornea transplantations successfully performed at UKC Tuzla

(Patria) - In cooperation with teams from Cantonal Hospital Zenica, University Clinical Center Tuzla (UKC), and Merkur University Hospital from Zagreb, two organ transplantations - liver and cornea - were performed yesterday at the University Clinical Center in Tuzla.

The liver explantation at Cantonal Hospital Zenica was independently performed by a multidisciplinary team from UKC Tuzla, while the transplantation at UKC Tuzla was done under the supervision of Assistant Professor Danko Mikulić, MD, and Assistant Professor Jadranka Pavičić Šarić, MD, from Merkur University Hospital in Zagreb, writes Politički.ba

According to information from the Press Service of UKC Tuzla this morning, the early postoperative course of the patients is proceeding in accordance with the performed surgical procedures, and the patients are currently hemodynamically stable.

"The model of domestic and international cooperation has resulted in positive successes. The liver transplantation performed yesterday is an indicator that transplantation as a form of treatment remains one of the priority projects at the Tuzla center.

This is the first liver transplant performed since 2021, and I hope that the organ and tissue transplantation project will gain momentum, and that the number of transplantations performed in the coming period will be much higher.

The transplantation project is of exceptional importance to us, because in addition to offering patients a new chance at life, by improving transplant medicine, we are also working on the development of all medical procedures," stated the acting director of JZU UKC Tuzla, Professor Šekib Umihanić, MD, PhD.

In addition to the multidisciplinary team of doctors for explantation and transplantation from the Clinic for Surgery and the Clinic for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, expert teams from the Polyclinic for Transfusion Medicine, Polyclinic for Laboratory Diagnostics, Hospital Pharmacy, Institute for Psychological and Social Protection, and the Sector for Technical Affairs also contributed to the performance of the mentioned transplantations at UKC Tuzla.

UKC Tuzla expresses great gratitude to the donor's family members, as well as to colleagues, supervisors from Merkur University Hospital in Zagreb, and members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tuzla Canton who contributed to the faster transport of organs with official escort, which is of exceptional importance in such cases.

According to Politicki.ba, the donor of the transplanted organs is from Zavidovići, and was a patient at Cantonal Hospital Zenica.

The explanted kidneys and the other cornea will be transplanted to patients in Sarajevo.
