Retired university professor Ahmed Smajić passes away in Sarajevo

(Patria) - Today in Sarajevo, at the age of 68, retired university professor Dr. Ahmed Smajić passed away.

Professor Smajić made a significant contribution during his rich academic career through research and publishing work, especially in the fields of education and economic development in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He was a member of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) since 1990, and during the defensive-liberation war he was a member of the Executive Board of SDA Novi Grad and SDA City of Sarajevo. He was also a member of the Presidency of the SDA.

From 1993 to 1996, he served as president of the Executive Board of the Novi Grad Sarajevo Municipality. From 1996 to 2000, he served as federal minister of agriculture, water management and forestry, and was also a representative in the Parliament of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For his long-standing academic and socio-political engagement, Prof. Dr. Smajić received numerous recognitions and awards, including: the ARBiH "Bosanski stećak" Plaque, the Golden Plaque of the Gradačac Fair, and the Golden Plaque of the Novi Grad Sarajevo Municipality.

In addition, he also received numerous international recognitions, including recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

On the occasion of the death of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Smajić, a commemoration will be held at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences of the University of Sarajevo on Monday, September 22, starting at 11:00 AM.

The funeral prayer and burial will take place on the same day at 2:00 PM at the Vlakovo City Cemetery.
