Visitors from around the world come to Potočari, but not from RS

The Memorial Center in Potočari is visited by people from all over the world. But not from Republika Srpska. I am sure that much more murky Drina will flow before people from this part of BiH understand the importance of this place – Mersed Smajlović, director of the Center which bears witness to the greatest massacre of Bosniaks in Europe after World War II, told the BiH news agency Patria (NAP).

Last year, the Memorial Center in Potočari was visited by 93,500 visitors, of whom nearly 10,000 were foreigners.

- People come from all over the world. Most visitors are from the Federation of BiH, and among foreign visitors, the most are from Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands, even America – Smajlović tells NAP.

The Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Center is a memorial to more than 8,000 murdered Bosniaks in Srebrenica. The genocide against Bosniaks was carried out by the Army of Republika Srpska between June 11 and 22, 1995, under the command of General Ratko Mladić.

- It is quite deserted here in winter. Especially during colder days. Only a few drop by. But from March onwards, everything is different. Visitors most often come without any particular feelings, but they leave here pale and thoughtful – says Smajlović.
