In this time of isolation and fear, it is most important to maintain a good mood and boost immunity

(Patria) - In this time of isolation and fear for our health, it is most important to maintain a good mood and boost your own immunity.

Here is an interesting text about how with the help of correct dosage of vitamin C and vitamin D, we can improve our own immunity, especially after the winter period which has depleted the reserves of these vitamins from our bodies.

As we approach the end of winter, vitamin reserves in the human body decrease; in fact, for some people, reserves may already be depleted. This deficiency can be exacerbated by reduced physical activity and an unhealthy diet. Therefore, we must ensure additional amounts of vitamins now when many of us feel spring fatigue and when there are illnesses around us. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are not yet widely available, which means that even a balanced diet may not be a sure way to ensure your body gets the right amount of vitamins. We should be particularly sure to consume enough vitamin C and D to strengthen our immune system.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, otherwise known as ascorbic acid, is absolutely vital for our body. It ensures the normal function of the immune system by aiding the function of white blood cells. It has an antioxidant effect, meaning it protects against damage caused by free radicals, and it is a proven fact that vitamin C improves our ability to resist infections. This vitamin is water-soluble, meaning our body cannot store it, so it is important to ensure it is consumed regularly. The daily recommended intake of vitamin C is at least 80 mg per day, which can be increased to 500-1000 mg per day during periods of vitamin deficiency and during disease epidemics.

"It would be difficult to list all the beneficial properties of vitamin C, as it participates in many processes in the human body. We may not notice its deficiency today, but due to reduced vitamin C intake, we may be more susceptible to illnesses in the coming weeks, so it is recommended to pay attention to our diet and take supplements if necessary," say nutrition experts.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is the most important support for the immune system. Research shows that this vitamin plays a key role in activating our resistance, meaning that those with lower levels of vitamin D than average are more likely to contract upper respiratory tract illnesses and are more susceptible to other diseases. We know that 80% of our vitamin D needs are met by production in our skin as a result of exposure to sunlight, and 10-20% of our vitamin D needs can be met by a balanced diet; however, in most cases, this is not enough to ensure optimal vitamin D levels. Although many believe it, going to a tanning salon is not a substitute for the vitamin D effect we get from the sun.

Health professionals a few years ago presented their joint stance that by the end of winter, the vast majority of the population in Europe may have a vitamin D deficiency. They also agree that even a healthy, balanced diet does not contain enough vitamin D to get through the winter and spring months, which is why everyone should take supplements during this period.

It is a good idea to have an additional source of this vitamin, especially at a time when there is not much sun and when we are forced to stay indoors. The recommended daily intake is 1500-2000 IU.
