More than a thousand exhausted refugees have arrived in Austria and Germany so far, with 8,000 arriving in Munich alone, Reuters reported, according to the Patria News Agency.
The refugees, many of whom are from Syria, ravaged by a multi-year civil war, arrived by train and bus in Vienna, and then by train to Munich and other German cities.
Around 1,000 refugees arrived in Munich from Austria on the last train, at 1:30 AM tonight, bringing the total number of migrants to Munich since Saturday to around 8,000. Police directed them to another train for Dortmund on the opposite platform.
Most of those who arrived by bus yesterday at reception centers in and around Munich were examined by doctors, given food, and offered clean clothes. Many stated they were from Syria, while others were from Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as Eritrea.
After days of confrontation and chaos at the Keleti railway station in Budapest, Hungary opened its borders with Austria, and thousands of refugees set off by bus, train, and on foot towards Germany as their key destination.
There is little indication of a coordinated response to the refugee crisis in the European Union, where 350,000 migrants have already arrived this year.
- The refugee crisis is here to stay, and nations must act together to deal with it effectively - stated EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini after "difficult talks" with foreign ministers in Luxembourg.
