Conference on Genocide in a Global Context Held at the Srebrenica Memorial Center

(Patria) - The conference "Srebrenica in a Global Context - Towards a Lasting United Nations Framework for Remembrance, Responsibility, and Action" was held at the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

This gathering brought together over 100 participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and around the world, including representatives of international organizations, the diplomatic corps, the academic community, civil society, and the media.

The conference was opened by the Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Emir Suljagić, British Ambassador to BiH Julian Reilly, Permanent Representative of BiH to the United Nations Zlatko Lagumdžija, and Dženeta Omerdić, advisor to the member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denis Bećirović.

- Our goal is for the United Nations Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica not to remain just a symbolic act, but to become part of a lasting international framework for remembrance, responsibility, and prevention.

Today, the Srebrenica Memorial Center is a place where experts, institutions, and young people from all over the world gather to work together on preserving the truth about the genocide and passing on that responsibility to new generations - said Suljagić.

In the introductory part of the conference, Mirela Osmanović, project coordinator, presented the results of the Srebrenica Outreach Project, implemented with the support of the Government of the United Kingdom.

In the period from April 2025 to April 2026, over 500 participants from around the world gathered through a series of programs and events at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, over 50 institutional partnerships were established, and more than 60 direct collaborations were achieved.

Within the project, the following programs were realized: SrebrenicaDocs, SrebrenicaKids, Srebrenica Media Encounters, Conference on Oral History, Conference on Dialogue in Srebrenica, Global Conference on Archiving and Museology, and Architects' Meetings in Srebrenica.

During the conference, three panels were held dedicated to key topics of the international approach to remembering the genocide in Srebrenica.

The panel "From Commemoration to Policy: Srebrenica in the United Nations System" was moderated by Merima Šemić-Prguda, and the participants were Chaloka Beyani, United Nations Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide, Arnhild Spence, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Munira Subašić, President of the Movement of Mothers of the Enclaves of Srebrenica and Žepa, and Emir Suljagić, Director of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

The panel "Confronting Genocide Denial: State Responsibility, Diplomacy, and Public Policy" was moderated by Lejla Gačanica from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the participants were Hikmet Karčić from the Institute for Research of Crimes Against Humanity and International Law of the University of Sarajevo, Vahid ef. Fazlović, Mufti of Tuzla, Ćamil Duraković, Vice President of the entity of Rs, and Nedim Jahić, external advisor for Srebrenica Memorial Center initiatives.

The third panel "Remembrance for the Future: Passing Truth to New Generations" was moderated by Tahir Žustra, and the participants were Sofija Todorović from the Youth Initiative for Human Rights Serbia, Almasa Salihović-Huseinović from the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Ajna Jusić from the organization Forgotten Children of War, and Refik Hodžić from the British Council.

The conference once again confirmed the importance of international cooperation in preserving the memory of the genocide in Srebrenica, as well as the need for the United Nations General Assembly Resolution on the International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica to be developed as part of a lasting international framework for remembrance, responsibility, and prevention.

The conference was organized by the Srebrenica Memorial Center, with the support of the Government of the United Kingdom, and the program was hosted by Benjamin Butković.
