(Patria) - Every March 31st, for twenty-one years now, the Srebrenica Memorial Center has been marking the anniversary of the first collective funeral, at which the first 600 victims of the Srebrenica genocide were buried.
With a symbolic program, attended by family members, mothers, fathers, and fellow citizens, we remember every year those who were the first to find peace in Potočari, but also all those whose remains are still being searched for.
Addressing the attendees, the Chairman of the Steering Board of the Srebrenica Memorial Center, Hamdija Fejzić, reminded of the importance of the struggle that families have been waging for decades, all so that the souls of the murdered victims find their peace and justice.
He also emphasized the important role of mothers who fought for the Memorial Center to be and remain in this exact place, and thanks to their persistence, this institution today represents a pillar of survival for Bosniaks in Srebrenica.
After the flower-laying ceremony, a Yasin and Tawhid were recited for the souls of the murdered victims of the genocide, followed by the noon prayer.
We remind that in 2003, two more funerals were held after March 31st, on July 11th, and then on September 20th, when the Memorial Center was officially opened.
