International Day of Missing Persons marked at the Srebrenica Memorial Center: Thousands of victims still being searched for

(Patria) - Organized by the Srebrenica Memorial Center and associations of mothers and women from Srebrenica and Bratunac, and in the presence of several hundred genocide survivors, the International Day of Missing Persons was symbolically marked starting at 11:55 AM.

Hamdija Fejzić, Chairman of the Steering Board of the Memorial Center, addressed the attendees, reminding them that genocide survivors are still searching for more than 1,000 of their loved ones after 28 years and that every year on this date they ask the same question, "Where are they?", and remain without an answer.

Fejzić reminded that those who know the locations of undiscovered mass graves remain silent and, as last year, called on the institutions of Republika Srpska, as well as individuals, to provide this information.

He added that the genocide survivors, along with the mothers, will not stop in their fight and efforts to find and bury the last victim of the genocide.

Representatives of four associations of mothers and women from Srebrenica and Bratunac participated in the commemoration program again this year, reminding everyone how important it is for every victim to be identified, regardless of their religious or national affiliation, because it is the right of every human being to have their own tombstone with their name and surname written on it.

Kada Hotić addressed the attendees on behalf of the association 'Movement of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves'. She reminded that as we remember our victims, our missing persons, we have an obligation to remember all those who are still considered missing today, wherever they may be in the world. She added that we must remain consistent in this fight so that every person gets their tombstone, their name and surname on it, and a dignified burial, because that is all that remains.

After the address program, attendees recited Yasin for the souls of those killed in the genocide and concluded the commemoration by visiting the exhibition displays of the Memorial Center, where they could view some of the items entrusted to the permanent care of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

It should be noted that today in our country, 7,607 people are still listed as missing, and their remains have not been found or identified even 28 years after the end of the war.
