31st anniversary of the death of BiH defense hero Zamo Dučić marked in the Alipašina Mosque courtyard

(Patria) - Today marks 31 years since the death of Zamo Dučić, a commander, fighter, and man who became a symbol of resistance and bravery.

His life, though cut short, left a deep mark on the history of the defense of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Born far from Sarajevo, Zamo found his home in the besieged city. When the aggression began, he did not seek safety, but a way to help.

At Hrasno Brdo, he was among the first to join the defense lines. His energy, determination, and willingness to always be on the front line made him a natural leader and a support for his comrades.

During the war years, he led people through the toughest battles, setting an example with his own actions. He was a commander who did not just issue orders, but shared hunger, cold, and danger shoulder to shoulder.

His death on September 24, 1994, on Čemrska planina, was a loss felt by both his comrades and the entire city, but at the same time, a moment when his name became part of collective memory.

Today, after 31 years, his comrades, family, and citizens gather to remember not only the soldier but also the man – modest, cheerful, and determined.

His grave in Sarajevo testifies that he found both a home and eternal peace here. The Minister for Veterans' Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, Omer Osmanović, also laid flowers today in the courtyard of Alipašina Mosque.

- Remembering Zamo Dučić is not just an obligation to the past. It is a reminder that freedom was never given, but fought for, and that behind every day of peace stand people who were willing to give their most valuable possession – their lives - was the message from today's commemoration.

It is the collective duty and obligation of all of us to keep the name and deeds of Zamo Dučić alive among future generations, so that our youth know that there was courage that defended their streets, their schools, and their future.

This hero lives on in our stories, in our prayers, and in our gratitude.

Zamo Dučić was the commander of the maneuver battalion of the 101st Brigade and the recipient of the highest wartime recognition, the "Golden Lily".
