Enrolment of first-graders begins in April

The Service of the Centar Municipality for Education, Culture and Sports reminds that the enrolment of children in the first grade of regular primary school takes place in April and August based on lists of school attendees provided to schools by the municipal authority in whose territory the school is located, reports the Patria news agency.

Children who turn 5 and a half years of age by March 1 of the current year are enrolled in the first grades of compulsory primary education.

When enrolling children in the first grade of regular primary school, it is necessary to submit: an extract from the birth registry, a medical certificate from the competent health institution (not older than six months), and a certificate that the child attended the compulsory preschool program. Enrolment will be carried out on the premises of the primary school.

The assessment of children's abilities upon enrolment in primary school is carried out by a commission composed of a pedagogue and a psychologist, as well as a classroom teacher, with prior procurement of a medical certificate from the competent health institution. Based on the commission's opinion, a child may be temporarily exempted from enrolment in regular primary school, up to the age of seven. A school that has adequate staff and spatial conditions may approve the enrolment of a younger child, if requested by parents or guardians and when, after considering the recommendation of relevant experts, it is determined that this is in the best interest of the child.
