(Patria) - During the hearing before the Municipal Court in Sarajevo, where the Prosecutor's Office of KS's proposal to extend the custody measures for the dean of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Sarajevo, Muhamed Ajanović, was considered, new details of the investigation were presented, as well as additional arguments from the suspect's defense.
Ajanović is suspected of committing the criminal offense of abuse of position and authority.
Prosecutor Darko Martinčević stated at the beginning that a large number of witnesses have been heard, and some of them have requested protection measures. As an argument for extending the custody measures, he cited the risk of flight, writes Istraga.
The Prosecutor's Office emphasized that witnesses stated that Ajanović keeps large amounts of money in his apartments, but none of it was found during the searches. In this regard, the Prosecutor's Office believes that he could use this money to stay at large.
It was reiterated that he has an apartment in New York that he uses for his stay. In addition, other reasons for extending the custody were listed.
"During 2024, Ajanović had his diploma from the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Sarajevo recognized at the University of Zagreb, and he possesses citizenship of that country. The suspect can practice his profession in any EU country. Ajanović did not state that he possesses an identity card and driver's license of Bosnia and Herzegovina," stated the Prosecutor's Office.
In this regard, during the defense's presentation, lawyer Alen Nakić submitted Ajanović's identity card and driver's license to the Court Panel.
The Prosecutor's Office stated that Ajanović's common-law wife contacted witnesses and gave them instructions on how to behave and what to do while the suspect is in custody.
"In the suspect's office, there was a discussion about not submitting documentation to the Prosecutor's Office. He created an atmosphere of fear. Everyone who opposed him was threatened," it was said during the hearing.
Lawyer Nakić allegedly participated in the concealment of evidence, stating that this is based on the testimony of Ranko Debevec, former president of the Court of BiH. He emphasized that he gave his statement via an official note, not as a witness, because, as Nakić claims, he fears criminal liability for perjury.
Debevec stated that Nakić conveyed instructions from the suspect to his common-law wife on how to conceal evidence from the case, which Nakić categorically denied during the hearing. He said that he was at the Municipal Court in Živinice that day.
- There is video surveillance, let them check. Arrest me, I invite you to arrest me - Nakić said jokingly.
The defense further stated that the Prosecutor's Office's proposal does not contain facts related to the extension of custody.
- The searches of Ajanović's apartments are a procedural smokescreen to obscure the actual state of the case, to create the illusion that the suspect is a serious criminal. If he did all that the Prosecutor's Office accuses him of, the question is how he managed to do his job at all - said Nakić.
He added that it hurt him that the Prosecutor's Office was making tendentious claims.
- Only financial documentation was seized from Ajanović's office. The Prosecutor's Office claims that there are double drawers, black money originating from criminal offenses, but none of that exists - stated Nakić.
