Turks to finance the reconstruction of Aladža Mosque

The protocol on the reconstruction of Aladža Mosque in Foča will be signed tomorrow by the Director of the General Directorate of Waqfs of Turkey Dr. Adnan Ertem and the Director of the Waqf Directorate of the Islamic Community in BiH Dr. Senaid Zajimović, reports the BiH news agency Patria (NAP).

Zajimović told NAP that, along with collecting and publishing all waqf documents from the Ottoman period, and the reconstruction of Isa-beg's hammam in Sarajevo, the reconstruction of Aladža Mosque is one of the most important projects currently financed by the General Directorate of Waqfs of Turkey in BiH.

Aladža Mosque was built in 1549 and was categorized as one of the larger mosques in BiH, and the first mosque in the country built in the classical Ottoman style. The greatest value of this mosque, according to experts, lies in the fact that many mosques built after it were constructed precisely in its style.

Aladža has been included in the cultural heritage of BiH and on the list of world heritage sites by UNESCO.

The mosque was demolished to its foundations by the Army of Republika Srpska during the aggression against BiH from 1992 to 1995.
