Trump advisor Mike Waltz leaves the White House

(Patria) - U.S. President Donald Trump's national security advisor Mike Waltz is leaving his post, Reuters reported, citing its sources.

Waltz was part of the U.S. team that negotiated the peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

He attended the negotiations in Saudi Arabia in March where a proposal for a 30-day ceasefire was put on the table.

Although the circumstances of his departure at this time are not clear, Waltz said he accepted "full responsibility" for the "Signalgate affair," Sky News recalls.

The scandal erupted after "The Atlantic" editor Jeffrey Goldberg was added to a group chat on the Signal messaging platform, along with top officials of the Trump administration, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth shared details about U.S. strikes on the Yemeni pro-Iranian rebel group Houthis.

Sky News assesses that Waltz was "clearly the sacrificial lamb in all this" and that Donald Trump may have "been waiting for this moment."

Waltz appeared on U.S. television this morning in the role of national security advisor, speaking about Ukraine and saying it is time to bring Russia to the negotiating table, Reuters writes.

- That was only a few hours ago, so this news was probably a surprise to him. It probably happened in the last few hours - said Sky News correspondent from the U.S. James Matthews.

Waltz, by his own admission, was the one who added Goldberg to the group chat on the encrypted messaging app, and Goldberg published the contents of the confidential messages in March in an article for his magazine, which caused a shake-up in the Trump administration.

The group included a number of other top administration officials, and alongside Hegseth there were also Vice President JD Vance, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and others.

In the group, named "Houthi PC small group," officials discussed details of the upcoming military strike on the Houthis.

The White House confirmed that the editor-in-chief of "The Atlantic" magazine was mistakenly included in a highly confidential group chat with a group of senior U.S. officials.
