Trump ready to halt military campaign against Iran

(Patria) - US President Donald Trump has told his aides that he is ready to halt the military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, leaving any complex effort to reopen it for a later stage, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing administration officials.

Trump and his aides have assessed that the mission to open the strait would push the conflict beyond the four-to-six-week timeframe, according to the news report.

- He decided that the US should achieve its main goals of limiting the Iranian navy and its missile supplies and reducing current hostilities, while diplomatically pressuring Tehran to continue the free flow of trade - the report states.

The Strait of Hormuz is a waterway crucial for oil and gas supplies.

Iranian state media reported on Monday that a parliamentary commission has approved plans to charge passage fees for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Citing a member of the parliamentary security committee, state television reported that the plan includes, among other things, "financial arrangements and passage fee systems" and "the implementation of Iran's sovereign role," AFP reported.
